Dramatic singer's film with Richard Tauber: The once acclaimed singer Stefan has retreated into the far distance out of disappointment and lovesickness. Now he hires on a ship to return home. On the way, he befriends the sailor Pieter, who takes him home to his mother. Pieter falls in love with a woman who turns out to be his sister, who has since started working as a prostitute. Stefan helps the friend, frees his sister from the milieu and takes her back to her mother. The men, however, are drawn back out into the faraway world.
